A Delightful Story

dear daughters,

Today I want to tell you a story. When I was about 17, almost 18, I heard a youth pastor talk about Psalm 37:4, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” It was the first time I felt like I really heard God speaking to me, somehow right to my heart through this pastor. The pastor said this Bible verse meant that if you found your happiness in God, instead of looking for happiness in the world, God would come into your heart and clean it up. Well, I knew I needed some things cleaned up. On the outside, I looked like a pretty good teen most of the time, but on the inside I had some desires, (urges to do things,) that I knew were not right. I didn’t put them there. But somehow they were there just the same. The pastor said these desires were sins, but because of Jesus, I could be forgiven for them and free from them. He said if I looked to God for my happiness, He would replace those wrong desires with His perfect ones, making me want the same good things in life that God wanted for me.

After that night, I couldn’t quit thinking about what the pastor said. I sure was tired of wanting things I knew were not right or best. And I was tired of acting on those desires, too. They usually didn’t lead to anything very good, and usually made me sad. So one day soon after, I asked God through Jesus to come into my heart and clean it up, and give me new desires that would make Him happy instead of me. And what happened? I became happier than ever! I figured out what it meant, to delight myself in God. It’s finding my happiness by seeking His happiness. And this is still what makes me happy today!

Divine Design

dear daughters,

Divine Design is one of Aimee’s and my favorite TV shows. Did you know God likes divine design too? He’s the Great Designer and designed all of creation. It’s so much fun when God divinely designs something really obvious! My daughters were divinely designed, and that’s why this blog is called daughters by design. My real daughter was designed for me and from me by the hand of God for the glory of God. My other two daughters were designed to be in my life as gifts from God. All three were designed to be daughters of the King, through their faith in Jesus Christ. And He has designed for all His daughters a specific, special purpose for living their lives on earth.

He divinely designs our lives, too. Even though we have a say-so in life, He can do whatever He thinks best anytime He chooses. He does let us make our own way and walk in our own choices, and they can teach us tough lessons sometimes. But because God loves us, He never designs life to be more than we can handle. How divine!

dear daughters

dear daughters,

God gave me an idea! I have to give Him credit, because He is the Creator and author of creativity. I LOVE creativity, don’t you? I know my creative artist daughter Aimee does. Anyway, back to the creative, new idea. I love you, I love to teach, I love to share what God has taught me, I love to see you succeed, AND I love to write! And I know that you love email and texting. SO….how about a Dear daughter e-note (and I mean note, not a novel) every day or so, with something to smile about or consider? If it’s free, electronic, and you don’t have to do a thing, then why not, right?

So here’s one for starters… Did you know that we are all children? I know you probably don’t like being called a child these days. Whether or not you are technically an adult, you probably don’t consider yourself a child since you are old enough to read this note. But even though I’m a mom, I’m still a child to God. And I am so happy that I am! The Bible tells me that I am a child of God because I believe and receive Jesus. That makes God my Father, the perfect Father, One who loves me, protects me and cares for me. Check out these Bible verses written by three different men - three of the twelve that walked with Jesus as His apostles.

John said, “But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12). Paul added, “And if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…” (Romans 8:17). Peter concluded, “To obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4).

You were born a daughter to someone. But what’s more important is that you are reborn as a daughter of the King when you claim Jesus as your Savior. And because He is royalty, His daughters have a royal inheritance! Now that’s a reason to rejoice!
